14 National press still ignoring the North It’s time to end ‘flat cap’ prejudice
I
t’s autumn and it’s back to business with a vengeance. We’ve had the political conference season, the return of parliament, a still-new Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the new
academic year. Andy Burnham, former mayor of Greater
Manchester, has inevitably shone a light on the north and our cover feature by Bury-
based Helen Nugent looks at the perceptions of journalists and journalism north of the Watford gap. We also visit Wales with a major NUJ conference on the future
of the media in the country attended by First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, himself a former journalist. An NUJ delegation went to the union movement’s biggest annual
event – the TUC Congress – winning support for our campaigns on public service broadcasting and a windfall tax on the tech giants among other issues. In his column Ray Snoddy looks at how President Trump’s
attempts to block and control US journalists have finally backfired. And with Channel crossings in small boats a constant feature of
the news, Ruth Addicott talks to journalists who cover the issue in her On Our Patch series. We also have other great features and news from your union. And
for the first time in a long while – a modest letters page. Do please keep it going by contributing!
