A community is comprised of caring individuals who take pride in the place they live. Welsh Mountain Home is no exception. One such caring individual gives of her time in order to ensure that her home looks lovely.

Creating a Better Home One Dandelion at a Time

R

esident Joan Forry is no stranger to the Lancaster area. She’s lived in Honey Brook, Elverson, and Lebanon County. She was employed by Te RCA Corporation. One of the projects she had the opportunity to work on early in her employment was the manufacture of one of the tubes

used on the Apollo spacecraft!

Joan has been a resident of Welsh Mountain Home for nearly a year, and she has found another project she enjoys. She spends her time in the front lawn and picks the dandelions, ensuring that it looks just as beautiful as the rest of the campus.

“I know that if you don’t pick the flowers, they’ll go to seed and then you’ll have a lot more,” Joan said. “I just want the place to look nice out front.”

She carries a few bags out with her to fill with dandelions. Picking the dandelions is a nostalgic activity for Joan. When she was younger, she had three brothers and three sisters. Besides babysitting and cleaning, one of the ways she would help out at home was to hunt dandelions for her mother to prepare as a salad every spring.

“We liked them,” she said. “We would make a dressing. Ten we would clean the dandelions and pour the dressing over them.” Joan would hunt for the dandelions while her mother would make the dressing.

“You have to pick the dandelions while they’re young, while they’re still yellow,” she warned. Te salad was a “treat the whole family loved.”

At Welsh Mountain Home, Joan still enjoys venturing out into the front lawn to hand-pick the dandelions and other weeds, but so far, she hasn’t shared the recipe of her mother’s famous dandelion salad.

“I enjoy my friends here at Welsh Mountain Home, and the food is good,” she said. “I help out by weeding the front.”
