A
t the excellent Avaloq Community Conference in Zurich recently the CEO of Avaloq, Juerg Hunziker, took some criticism from the press about the lack of women who have reached the top echelons
of the company. Hunziker said to Backchat: “I tell you honestly our senior management has been trying to boost female employees at the highest level
“I’m a big believer in diversity, it is the right thing to do. However, what I do not believe is just to put a woman into a position because she is a woman. The problem is not just an Avaloq problem, it is a societal one. In some countries, such as Sweden, the ability of women to take higher positions in organisations is helped immensely by the facilities women have to enable them to return to work after having children.”
Hunziker was not trying to make excuses for Avaloq but what he said rang true. He also told the story of his own daughter, who is studying International Affairs at University, who worked an internship at a major Swiss bank. When she had fi nished she declared to Hunziker that she would never work at a bank because it would “restrict my life so much”. And this is the nub of the matter – banks want clever people who are brilliant at maths and economics. Women are not being atttracted to those subjects (or IT for that matter) all across the globe. Working in a bank has no attraction for a whole new generation of women who are not in the least attracted to long, unpredictable hours with little stability. It’s a problem we all have to solve.
A true story from Texas we heard recently. An intern starts in a bank department that assists local banks with repossessions. It is her first day on the job and she has been told only to file paperwork – her training will begin tomorrow. She gets a call from a young lady who is hysterical, having just had her car repossessed. Caller: “[Manager] told me to talk to you. What do I do?” Intern: “Um… hold, please.” She calls the manager. Manager: “Yeah, I didn’t feel like talking to her. Just tell her what her rights are.” Intern: “But I don’t know what they are.” Manager: “Figure it out!”
Intern Googles consumer rights for people who have had their vehicles repossessed and reads them off to the girl. Her second day went about the same way, and she ended up quitting.
