PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Shawn Gay, DC

President, WSCA Board of Directors

While the last few weeks of 2017 wind down and I look back on all that we have seen this year, I find myself struggling to come up with a cheery message that will appeal to everyone. For those who know me personally, you know that political correctness isn’t exactly my strong

suit. This year has been challenging for the WSCA from a legislative standpoint, and so I have found my patience tested many times. As chiropractors, we just want what’s best for our patients’ health; so it can be difficult for many of us to try to operate in the policy world where multiple competing interests get prioritized over what’s right for people’s wellbeing. It’s enough to make you want to flip the table and walk out.

But this issue of Plexus isn’t about policy—it’s about practice building and patient education. Still, I can’t help but focus on the importance of educating our patients about the policy issues that are impacting their care and our ability to provide it. In this issue, you’ll find articles about building and protecting your practice, as well as a look back on recent programs and events the WSCA participated in. But you’ll also find a pull-out section that we’re encouraging every member to use with patients, lawmakers, other healthcare professionals, and really anyone who could stand to learn more about how chiropractic is the single best weapon against the opioid epidemic.

We’ve prepared a brochure for you to reference when discussing the issue with any of a number of audiences. (If you’d like more, they can be purchased in packs of 25 from the WSCA.) This tool can help us shine a light on what we do, what we can do, and why the need for chiropractic has never been clearer. Impassioned, personal testimonials of our work just aren’t doing it. We need hard facts in print to sway decision-makers—whether they’re in government, in the growing pool of people who need our services, or in the other healthcare professions that ought to be referring patients to us.

Our profession has so much to offer. If people just set aside their self-interests and focus on what works—chiropractic as an indispensable tool in comprehensive healthcare—countless more lives would be improved. The science is on our side; the tough part is delivering the message. This tool from the WSCA should make it a little bit easier.
