Seven Essentials to Health and Well Being

Tristin McLaren, LAc, CCE Standard Process NW, Inc., WSCA Gold Level Corporate Partner

The seven essentials consist of: 1. Structure

The structure of the body, such as posture and alignment, may enhance or obstruct healthy function of the body.

2. Diet and nutrition

The types and quality of food and beverage your patients choose may have an impact on their state of nutrition as required by the body.

3. Digestion

Healthy digestion may support better nutritional status.

4. Hormones

A balanced hormone system helps coordinate the body’s multiple systems toward a more balanced state of wellbeing.

5. Exercise

Important for building a resilient musculoskeletal system, improving cardiovascular health, and increasing oxygenation of tissues.

6. Stress Are your patients flourishing in their overall health and wellness?

By focusing on seven comprehensive, fundamental health topics, you can generate a patient- centered health and wellness plan to further support the treatment of the chief complaints that brought them to your office.

A welcome bonus to this approach is improved patient retention, and often, increased referrals. Dr. James Powell, DC, FICC, FACC, developed The Seven Essentials to Health and Well- Being approach more than two decades ago and it has been successfully used ever since.

Educating patients about these seven essential areas provides clear directions for diet and lifestyle changes they can make at home to improve the results of the care they receive in your office. By addressing these areas as part of your patients’ comprehensive care plans, they will benefit from a more balanced metabolic state and a more stable emotional state to accompany the support for the physical ailment they sought care for initially.

Whether physically, nutritionally or emotionally based, negative stress may have undesirable impacts on overall health.

7. Thoughts

Frequent negative thoughts or feelings of hopelessness may create barriers to achieving health goals.

Implementing the Seven Essentials begins in your office and continues after your patients leave as they incorporate these health and wellness practices into their daily lives. Integrating these areas into your care plans can create a full framework upon which your final treatment plan can blossom — patients can more readily reach their health goals.
