 Why do we do the things we do? Why do we get out of bed in the morning?


Motivation is something that drives each one of us to take action. It is not surprising that motivation comes in many forms and that we use different types depending on our circumstances. Let’s use our careers as a way to better


understand the types of motivation we might experience and how it drives us in different ways.


1. Intrinsic


Tis is the type of motivation that starts with an internal desire to do something. In the case of your career, this would drive someone to go to work each day and perform well because there is an internal voice that says we ought to do this.


2. Achievement


Tis is the type of motivation that may have started when you received your first certificate or award for a job well done. Tat felt great and you found that the desire to get more of that type of recogni- tion motivated you. Or maybe you saw someone else get an achievement and you decided that you wanted that too. Tis type of motivation pushes you to greater titles and positions in your career.

Incentive Now incentive-driven motivation is a sister to achievement but not quite the same. Tis is based on rewards. Make a goal, get a bonus. People see a task through in order to receive a promised reward. Tis is what a lot of em- ployers focus on because incentives can easily be tied to an achievable goal. But we know there are a lot of other motivators in our lives.


5. 4. Extrinsic


Tis is an external motivation for the things we do. I have to earn a paycheck to keep a roof over my head and food on the table. It is my responsibility to take care of myself and my loved ones.


Fear Fear can be a powerful motivator. Fear of failure can move mountains. It can drive a person toward a goal at the same time it drives a person away from bad.


6. Power


Tis type of motivation is an island unto itself. Power can be used for good or evil. When you believe that power can influence your surroundings for the better, this type of motivation can spur you on.

Competence Te desire to achieve excellence in some way can provide you with the incentive to work hard toward that goal. You may want to speak Spanish, teach a class or mentor others. Competence in a subject matter can be motivating.


During the life of your career, motivation can wax and wane. If you find your enthusiasm ebbing, try using a different motivator to keep going. You may need to step back and take a look at what you do and where you work from a different perspective to shift your motivation. But if you do, you may find a renewed energy for and commitment to the work you do.
