• Competence in using work to risk, COSHH assessments and Safe Systems Of Work


• Previous welding experience, including significant exposure to SMAW, GSFCAW, GTAW and SAW welding processes,


with a comfort level working at heights and in confined spaces


• A recognised Welding Apprenticeship to N/SVQ Level 3 as a minimum

Would Richard recommend becoming a welder? “I would definitely say if you have the option, take it, because with most types of welding, you can progress anywhere. And, with the hands-on experience you gain, you will have a better understanding, so if you do want to go into design or inspection or just engineering in general, you have that advantage,” he says. “Welding is a very versatile skill


that allows you to go between industries and jobs. It also provides a great foundation for going into design, for example.
