With its diverse landscapes and an array of charming towns and villages, Massachusetts is an ideal place to set out on a US road trip
Not only is the New England state readily accessible to visitors from the UK, but the ease of travel between regions allows you more time to explore the fascinating variety of histories and cultures you’ll soon discover. Here’s a curated guide to three of the most exciting and idyllic road trips in Massachusetts — the open road awaits.
Greater Boston and North of Boston Culturally inclined travellers and avid history buffs should consider a road trip through Greater Boston and the north of Boston. Massachu- setts is called the ‘Spirit of America’
for its defining role in the American Revolution, and road-trippers will have the opportunity to explore the nation’s colonial history on their journey. Start your trip off in Boston and walk the Freedom Trail before heading out on the 30-minute drive north to Salem. Te historic town is famous for its
witch trials and visiting the Salem Witch Museum is a must. From Salem, it’s another 30 minutes west to Lexington, where a Liberty Ride Trolley Tour takes visitors back to the days of Colonial America. Te final stop is Lowell, also known as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution — you can

Central and Western Massachusetts A road trip through Central and Western Massachusetts offers visi- tors a chance to experience the beauty of the New England land- scape while also appreciating the vibrant farm-to-table culinary scene available in the region. Start your road trip in Worcester and experi- ence the city’s music and art scene with a visit

Center and the Worcester Art Museum. Drive an hour south west

to Springfield to explore the Spring- field Museums, a collection of five museums, including the always-pop- ular Te Amazing World of Dr Seuss Museum. Te museum-hopping continues in Amherst and North- ampton at the Emily Dickinson Museum and the Smith College Botanic Gardens and Museum of Art. From there, set out for Deerfield for a scenic hike in the Mount Sugar- loaf State Reservation. Next up is a drive down Mohawk Trail, one of the oldest auto-touring roads in the US. Te final stop on your adventure is Jiminy Peak, the largest ski resort in southern New England, open year- round for all-season adventure.

early settlers at Plymouth Rock with a visit to the Plimoth Patuxet Museums and Pilgrim Hall Museum. From there, set out for New Bedford, the most important fishing port in the US, and visit the New Bedford Whaling Museum to learn more about the state’s seafaring past. Ferries from New Bedford will transport you to Martha’s Vine- yard and Nantucket, where you can visit island art galleries, including Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks and Nantucket’s many artisan galleries, some
