With the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic still being keenly felt across the travel industry, the mythical ‘new normal’ we’ve all been anticipating for nearly two years has yet to assert itself. Instead, society is having to adapt and react on a near constant basis. The travel industry is no exception, and has proven to be resilient, innovative and fearless in the face of incredibly difficult challenges. With that said, we are certainly in a less precarious position than

we were a year ago. As we move towards a brighter, more hopeful future, it’s important to celebrate our achievements as much as we commiserate during the challenging times. There’s much to be encouraged by, and of course, ASTA continues to fight your corner. Our wins during the Covid-19 pandemic have been huge: independent contractors and

self-employed advisors became eligible for unemployment benefits for the first time in history; travel agencies received assistance under the Paycheck Protection Program, and ASTA successfully lobbied to save part of the Alaska cruise season through the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act. Equally important, ASTA’s education webinars and outreach empowered members to identify and apply for benefits which often were implemented in confusing ways. For ASTA’s eighth annual Legislative Day, 175 travel advisors traveled from 40 different states

to the nation’s capital to ask for their support on three bills pending in Congress designed to help get agencies, advisors, and the travel industry back on their feet. In addition to our advocacy on the Hill, ASTA ran a sponsored article in POLITICO and held a pre-event press conference at the National Press Club to reinforce our message to Congress. It’s important to remember that while there are 160,000 travel advisors in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau, those positions in the distribution chain support 750,000 travel sector jobs more broadly. Today we have two priorities. First, to provide additional support to hard-hit businesses. While

the latest relief bills provided some breathing room and many in Congress are ready to move on from Covid relief, their constituents in the agency sector remain at risk of losing their livelihood. And, of course, we are committed to the restarting of international travel. Much needs to happen here, from harmonizing international entry restrictions to modifying CDC’s inbound testing rule so vaccinated Americans are not at risk of being stranded overseas to supporting work on interoperable digital health systems. What’s clear is that international travel will not safely return to pre-pandemic levels without the leadership of the U.S. government. We hope that the pages that follow remind you just how big our world is, how much there is left to explore and how far we can still go, together.
