Wines connected with the land and nature
A historic estate in Portugal’s Alentejo dating back to 1467
Linked to Dom Ruy de Sousa, Tapada de Coelheiros has evolved from traditional cork oak forests into a diversified property of vineyards and walnut groves. Revitalised in the 1980s and producing its first red wine in 1991, the estate entered a new chapter in 2015 under new leadership that embraced organic certification and new approaches to restore and protect its unique agroforestry system. Covering nearly 1,976 acres
— including 131 acres of vineyards and 49 acres of walnut orchards — the estate is a living mosaic of forests, groves and wilderness where deer, hares and wild ducks roam freely. Its architecture reflects the serene beauty of the Alentejo, with whitewashed walls, terracotta roofs and stone courtyards overlooking rolling vineyards and hills. At its heart lies the cork oak
forest, where a traditional harvest, only carried out every nine years, symbolises the rhythm of nature and the estate’s commitment to
patience and regeneration. Visitors can walk through walnut orchards, join guided vineyard tours, taste wines beneath cork trees or explore the landscape on foot or by bicycle. All wines are made from estate-
grown grapes, shaped by limestone soils and a Mediterranean climate, with labels inspired by Arraiolos tapestries. Throughout the year, guests can take part in grape harvests, olive picking and walnut gathering. Located about one hour from
Lisbon, the estate offers easy access to the charming town of Arraiolos, which is a 15-minute drive away.
MORE Wander through walnut orchards, join vineyard tours and savour a meal by the firepit or at the ‘Taco’ house.
