Science brings hope for headache sufferers

Headaches are universal. Most of us experience occasional, mild tension- type headaches, but these rarely cause any major problems. More severe, recurrent headaches, however, are a different story. One in three people experience migraines at some point in their lives. Migraines cause debilitating head pain, associated with other features such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to lights, noise and movement. Many people

with migraine also experience aura, a period of neurological impairment usually affecting vision, but which can also impair speech, sensation, co- ordination or cognition. To make things worse, many

migraine sufferers are dismissed by doctors; it’s all too common for them to be told that they just have to learn to live with their headaches. However, help is now at hand.

Dr Mark Weatherall, consultant neurologist and headache specialist at the London Headache Centre, has drawn on over 20 years’ experience as a neurologist, both in NHS and private practice in the UK, to produce Living with Headaches. This book covers the headache basics (the common types of headache and how they are diagnosed), the science behind headaches, and treatment options — from lifestyle modifications to surgery — and goes on to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about headaches. “People who suffer from

headaches, and those who care for them, will find Living with Headaches very helpful in helping them understand headaches better, and in providing some practical

steps to improve matters,” says Dr Weatherall. “And if, aſter reading Living with Headaches, they decide to consult a headache specialist, the advice contained in the book will enable them to have a fuller, more constructive conversation with their specialist.” “It is always helpful to talk about

your headaches with someone who understands the science, can make a diagnosis, and come up with a treatment plan,” concludes Dr Weatherall. “The old myth, that

nothing can be done for people who suffer from headaches, has never been less true.”

Mr Franco Ciulli is one of the UK’s most experienced cardiac surgeons, with over 30 years working as a consultant in open heart surgery, specialising in minimally invasive procedures. His NHS practise is based at the prestigious Bristol Heart Institute and he sees patients privately at the Spire Hospital Bristol where he has been a consultant surgeon since 1999.

heart operations as a consultant, including heart and lung transplants, beating heart coronary artery bypasses, mitral valve repairs, aortic valve replacements and hybrid AF ablations for atrial fibrillation. Mr Ciulli is also part of the heart team delivering TEER (mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair) for patients too high-risk to undergo open heart surgery. Mr Ciulli

trained in many internationally renowned centres, where he gained experience in all aspects of adult and paediatric cardiac surgery. He trained extensively in heart and lung transplantation in Papworth and St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, where he performed over 100 transplants. In Glasgow, he became experienced in coronary artery surgery

and degenerative valve surgery in patients with particularly adverse disease. He gained experience in mitral valve repair techniques in Paris Hospital, Broussais and Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc, Brussels, where he worked with Alain Carpentier and Gerbrine El Kouhuri, two of the worlds’ leaders in mitral valve repair. Mr Ciulli lead the Bristol team in

securing £60m from the government to build the Bristol Heart Institute in 2001 and has developed and introduced pioneering techniques in heart surgery, including mitraclip and hybrid AF ablation, a minimally invasive surgery. In 2019, he was asked to

participate in the production of a film on cardiovascular disease, which became a feature film on Prime Video, called Deep in the Heart. This followed the lives of four patients undergoing heart surgery under his care. Mr Ciulli has been published extensively in scientific peer-reviewed journals and was co-editor and author of the textbook Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery. Mr Ciulli’s interest in cardiac

surgery began in his childhood, seeing surgeons such as Barnard

and DeBakey in the media performing pioneering open heart procedures. The progression from childhood dream to professional reality laid in his developing interest for science and the evolution of surgical techniques and new technologies. Mr Ciulli won the

Top Doctors Award in 2022 for his work in the field of cardiac surgery. His passion continues in helping patients with complex heart conditions to achieve improved health and a better quality of life.
