Seasonal interior style
Celine Interior Design specialises in luxury interiors. Discover new ways to refresh interior schemes and create a feeling of warmth in time for winter
Noor Charchafchi, CEO and founder of Celine Interior Design, believes that interior design shouldn’t have a style or a personality — it should, by its very definition, take on the personality of those living within it. It should stand to become extraordinary and unique in nature, and the moment it doesn’t have this individuality, you know that it’s a personal ego rather than real design. An environment of warmth can
be created by using your mental associations, so you would first need to work out what those associations are and then align them with your refreshed winter scheme.
Wool and cashmere can give you a feel of winter and warmth and their softness can create a powerful sense of comfort
A lot of associations of warmth
are connected to understanding or interpretation of fabrics, colours and finishes. Sometimes, these associations can be cultural or just a common belief. Wool and cashmere, for example,
can immediately give you a sense of winter and warmth and their soſtness can create a powerful sense of comfort and cosiness associated with the winter months. Another common association
is one with colour. Winter is oſten connected to warmer tones of deeper colours like brown, reds, taupe, burgundy and burnt orange. This is great because it’s quite easy to add all of these as accents to a neutral base colour in your design scheme. However, it’s also important to note that colour has cultural implications. As an example, in some places the colour red can symbolise danger, passion and excitement, but in South Africa, it represents mourning which is quite evidently a powerful difference. Finish and texture are also
powerful additions to a space when trying to create a feeling of warmth for winter. Finish can also represent a sense of outdoor energy,
so it’s important to get the balance right. A finish that’s more rustic can symbolise a warmer feeling of winter, but what’s great about a rustic texture like a rattan or an unfinished timber is that they also work really well for summertime.
There are definitely some finishes that inspire a winter mood, like woods and warmer stones as well as soſter paints. If done well, wellness can also
be a huge part of a homely winter feeling. The general belief that wellness is white and sterile is far from the reality of the concept. Bringing in the green outdoors, whether through plants, water or colour that alludes to it, is a great place to start.
