Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia — your next nature adventure

The unbridled beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park enchants every visitor. Its crystal-clear lakes, the murmur of water and the sound of waterfalls echoing through the forest are the reason why Plitvice Lakes is by far the most-visited national park in Croatia

P

litvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. With its

exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and it was declared a national park on 8 April 1949. Te process of tufa formation, which forms barriers and thus creates lakes, is the outstanding universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recog- nised with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, on 26 October 1979. Te Plitvice Lakes system consists

of 16 named and numerous smaller, cascading lakes. Big Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Plitvice Lakes and in Croatia, at 255ft. Covering an area of about 115sq miles, there’s an exceptional wealth of flora and fauna. Research has shown that about 1,400 plant species grow in the Park, and of particular interest are three species of carnivorous plant and over 60 species of orchid. Due to the extraor- dinary diversity and preservation of natural habitats, Plitvice Lakes National Park is home to many animal species, of which 259 species of verte- brates, 14 species of amphibians and reptiles, 168 species of birds, 321 species of butterflies and three large, strictly

protected and endangered

large carnivores, bears, wolf and lynx. Te great value of the Plitvice Lakes National Park is found in forests that

cover 81% of its surface, where the most common species of trees are beech, fir, spruce, pine and black horn- beam. In the area of the Park is hidden and specially protected impressive Rainforest Corkova uvala. Te oldest tree here is a beech that’s over 569 years old, which makes it one of the oldest trees of this species in Europe. In order to contribute to climate change mitigation and bio d i v e r s i t y conservat ion, Plitvice Lakes conducts contin- uous

research

and monitoring of forest ecosystems. Te fact that it’s fourth in the world in terms of CO2 absorption from the atmosphere in the category of ‘world natural heritage’ speaks volumes about the forest management.
