Although the first destination of almost every visitor to Serbia is the capital Belgrade, only some 55 miles to the north lies one of the best-kept secrets of this country, the European Capital of Culture 2022 and the European Youth Capital 2019

T

he city of Novi Sad is the home of

New the award-winning EXIT festival, as well as rich

cultural heritage. Novi Sad has been an informal

cultural centre of Serbia for over a century — a space for active encoun- ters with cultures and different iden- tities. Novi Sad is a city of museums, galleries and events, and recently, thanks to the European Capital of Culture title,

it’s also adorned with

the award for the best European trend brand of the year at the European Cultural Brand Awards 2021.

Sad as the European Capital of Culture comes from the slogan ‘For

Bridges’, which represents

the idea of building new bridges of cooperation and exchange between artists and organisations. Within this concept, four programme bridges and eight programme arches (chronolog- ically arranged programme units) are defined.

Novi Sad’s new cultural identity: eight Programme Arches in 2022 Te title year was opened with Docek, a unique celebration in Europe based on dualism: two celebrations of New Year’s Eve, two days, two ways of calcu- lating time, two alphabets and two forms of art. Te title year continues with Migrations (from 1 February until 22 March): the programme unit that takes into consideration the move- ment of the population as an inspira- tion in art, followed by the Future of Europe (from 20 March until 15 May): the programme unit dedicated to chil- dren and young people, with the focus

Te programme concept comes from the slogan ‘For New Bridges’, which represents the idea of building new bridges of cooperation between artists and organisations

on creating a better future of Europe through culture and art. Heroines (from 16 May until 12

June) will present female culture, art and creative process with an homage to prominent women of Novi Sad, who are the inspiration for exhibitions, concerts

and other programmes.

Fortress of Peace (from 17 June until 17 July) deals with deliberations and a critical overview on warfare and its consequences, searching for the culture of peace. Danube Sea (from 22 July until 21 August) will present cultural heritage and the

preserva-

tion of the natural wealth of one of the biggest rivers in Europe. One of the legacy programmes of

Novi Sad as the capital of culture, the fifth Kaleidoscope of Culture will be held from 1 September until 7 October. During five weeks, it will

present five forms of art, at iconic and new places for culture and in newly restored spaces, connecting local and European scenes with the citizens of Novi Sad. Te title year will be closed with the programme unit Other? Europe (from 8 October until 27 November). Te programme arch will discover different, alter- native, marginalised, minority, and rebellious expressions by reassessing dominant values in European culture and art.
