SMART TRAVELLER
BIG PICTURE
Negombo, Sri Lanka At dawn in the fishing port of Negombo,
on the west coast of Sri Lanka, hundreds of fishermen return to unload their catch. The vast fish market here is the biggest in the country, and is well known for its longstanding practice of drying fish. A huge variety of fish — among them tuna, seer fish and spats — are prepared using time-honoured methods. Once landed, they’re gutted and salted before being laid out in the sun to dry on long carpets of hessian fabric. As well as providing a readily available food source, this labour- intensive trade relies heavily on local women who work long hours in the heat of the day. SCOTT SALT // PHOTOGRAPHER
