veryone has their own image of California. There’s the San Francisco of the 1960s — flower power, the Summer of Love, hippies, psychedelia… Then there’s


Los Angeles’ sun-kissed, sandy beaches and surfer lifestyle epitomised by Baywatch and The Beach Boys. A century of Hollywood cameos as well as starring roles


in shows such as The OC, Big Little Lies and Beverly Hills, 90210 has made the Golden State instantly recognisable. But stray beyond the starry trappings of the two main cities, and California’s rich natural landscapes reveal themselves — the feted vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, forests of giant redwood, and stellar national parks such as Yosemite and Joshua Tree. So, where to start with such a vast state? One that’s


fuelled by an economy bigger than the UK’s and that lays claim to a population nudging 40 million. This issue explores the California you really need to


know about. From glacier-capped mountains and North America’s driest desert to the underrated state capital and a remote community where Old West and New Age lifestyles collide, we unearth a wealth of experiences too rich and varied to squeeze into a short trip.
