I know I have only touched on a few of the tools that

we all have in our own toolboxes. I would also like to admit that, while I am pretty old, I was not around during the time of all of these inventions. These are not personal experiences that I am relating to you. I got most of this information from the internet which, I have to admit, is another tool that we mechanics have at our disposal. I will leave the history of computers for another writer. These tools are extensions of our fingers, hands, arms,

legs, eyes and ears. They increase our physical abilities. Now, I am not going to

preach to you about tool quality control. The company you work for probably has some kind of a tool control program and I believe it is a good thing. I just want to talk about a few basic hand tool tips that I believe in. • I know that I said in the beginning of this that article that I wouldn’t promote one brand of tool over another, and I’m not. However, I do recommend buying quality tools. Let’s face it, you get what you pay for. Bigger is not always better when it comes to tools. Quality tools are usually lighter, stronger, easier to use and are more dependable than cheaper ones.

• Take the time to organize your toolbox and tools. We have many tools. If they are just thrown in the box, we are going to spend more time just digging and sorting to find the right tool than fixing the aircraft. It’s a waste of time and it makes tool accountability impossible!

• Keep them clean. Greasy or oily tools are dangerous. You can easily lose the grip on hardware possibly cutting or breaking a finger or your hand, not to mention damaging the aircraft.

• Finally, use the right tool for the right job. There may be several ways to remove a nut and bolt but I’m sure you know the proper way by now. Don’t get lazy.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this little trip through

history. You may think that you are just a mechanic but as you have read in the story, you are part of a long line of engineers, inventors and thinkers that have helped to develop our civilization into what it is today. When people use the phrase, “It’s not rocket science,” I tell them, “Yes it is! Man couldn’t have gone to the moon without any of this.”
