Proximity to the UK and the ability to drive to a destination are new prerequisites for many travellers thanks to the pandemic. Thankfully, a number of gems lie within easy distance, not least the province of Champagne in northeastern France, where rolling vineyards and cool, damp underground tunnels combine to create the world’s most celebratory beverage. Tours are available at most champagne houses, among them Moët & Chandon, one of the largest champagne makers in the world; Taittinger, whose chalk quarry cellars are Unesco-listed; and Ruinart, the oldest established champagne house, dating back to 1729.
