Sea & Beaches

Did you know?

While some of Tobago’s beaches are home to

restaurants, bars and shops, many more are secluded bays with no facilities.

Here, you might have the beach to yourself!

“There are so many

beautiful beaches. Pigeon Point is absolutely

gorgeous, and I loved the

beach at Castara. You must also go out on a boat trip. Hopefully you’ll see the

coral and various fish, and if you’re really lucky perhaps a stingray or turtle.”

to receive this recognition. The international Blue Flag programme sets a high standard for sustainability practices, encouraging efforts across environmental management, water quality and safety. The three beaches have their own

unique personalities: King’s Bay offers soft white sand, cabanas and a relaxed place to swim and snorkel, while the quieter Bloody Bay is surrounded by lush greenery. Then there’s Mount Irvine Bay, which, thanks to rocks that split the beach in two, offers both a tranquil side with calm waters for swimming and a side that’s ideal for surfers between December and March.

AWARD-WINNING TOURS The Blue Flag endorsement has been given to two glass-bottomed boat operators in Tobago – Ms Ayana and Coolrunnings – who join tour boat company Top Catch Charters, which was recertified. Top Catch Charters offers eco-coastal tours, leaving no trace in the turquoise waters it travels through, thanks to a stringent

no-plastic policy – barbecue lunches are served on bamboo plates. When booking a boat trip from

Tobago, sailing out to the famous Nylon Pool – which earnt its name for its transparent ‘nylon-like’ waters – is a must. Legend has it that swimming in the shallow waters will make you look 10 years younger, and although the pool may not actually have the anti-ageing powers it professes, a swim here makes a blissfully refreshing stop nonetheless, especially on a gloriously warm day. Snorkellers are bound to love the

surrounding reefs, which teem with fish, and adventure seekers will enjoy the opportunity to swim ashore to No Man’s Land, an uninhabited beach of white coral sand that looks as if it’s straight out of a Maldivian atoll. Glass-bottom boat trips are also

on hand for clients who prefer to view their sea life without getting into the water. Many of them offer trips out to Buccoo Reef, a protected

marine area that’s filled with coral and a spectrum of colourful marine life, including angelfish, parrotfish and butterflyfish.

STAY BY THE SHORE If staying in a hotel close to the beach is important for clients, suggest Coco Reef Resort & Spa, which sits beside a secluded bay with golden, sandy beaches and clear waters with a gentle incline, making it perfect for a paddle or for families with younger children. On the other side of the island,

Blue Waters Inn sits right on the beachfront, and has a relaxed yet chic Aegean feel. All of the rooms face the ocean and there are smart, more intimate bungalows just steps from the sand – a perfect spot for couples seeking space to themselves in yet another slice of Tobagan paradise. ■
