Festival Musicas do Mundo Alentejo, July 2020


Bringing together a variety of music genres including jazz, urban music and folk, FMM is held every year in the Sines municipality, on the Alentejo coast. The festival draws music enthusiasts who are keen to discover new genres. It takes place at a site just south of Lisbon, with transport provided to and from the capital for visitors wanting to combine the event with a city break.


Viagem Medieval Porto and the North, July 29-August 9, 2020


One of the largest medieval recreations in Europe, this festival sees locals and visitors in the village of Santa Maria da Feira reimagine how time was back in the Middle Ages. There are a number of performances and re-enactments for visitors to watch across the site of the event, as well as a farm, playgrounds, and games for children. Attendees can also try their hand at one of the festival’s activities, such as archery.


Azores Trail Run Azores, May 8-10, 2020


The Azores are well known for their natural beauty, and this three- day event on Faial Island gives visitors the chance to see it on foot. Participants don their running shoes and take to one of the six tracks, ranging in distance from 1km to 118km around the island.


Madeira Wine Festival Madeira, August 30-September 13, 2020


Budding sommeliers shouldn’t miss out on one of the biggest events in Madeira’s calendar. Celebrated since the 1970s, the Madeira Wine Festival, in Funchal, honours the drink made on the island with tastings, displays and demonstrations of the wine- making process. Visitors can also pair the wine with live music as the European Folklore Week often coincides with the festival.


Obidos Chocolate Festival Centre of Portugal, date TBC


The small town of Obidos in the Centre of Portugal region plays host to an annual chocolate festival. Visitors can watch live demonstrations, admire the chocolate sculptures or even try their hand in a workshop. Kids can also get involved with their own workshops and activities in the Children’s Chocolate House. While in Obidos, make time for the local liquor, ginjinha, made by infusing morello cherries and traditionally drunk out of a small chocolate cup.


Olhão Seafood Festival Algarve, August 2020


The south coast of Portugal is well-known for its seafood, and in the Algarve town of Olhão, located next to Faro, people visit each summer to sample it. The annual Olhão Seafood Festival showcases the best of the cuisine, with many restaurants in the area participating. The rice dishes are highly recommended. Visitors can also enjoy the festival’s live music.
