The EN2 is a road that runs straight down the country from Porto and the North to the Algarve. Whether you want to stretch your legs or stop for a little longer, there are some idyllic places to visit along the way

Chaves Porto and the North

Around six miles south of the Spanish border, Chaves marks the start of the EN2. Surrounded by mountains, the Roman town is well-known for its spas. One of the most picturesque spots in the city is by Trajan’s Bridge, a Roman bridge built over the Tâmega River, where it reflects beautifully on the water.

Lamego Porto and the North

The EN2 passes by the Shrine of our Lady of Remedies, an ornate church that sits atop Mount St Stephen. Visitors walk up the baroque staircase’s 686 steps to reach it. It’s a worthwhile climb, as the staircase boasts beautiful architecture and is adorned with blue and white tiles. The picturesque view from the top overlooks the town, set against a backdrop of rolling hills.

Viseu Centre of Portugal

The centre of Viseu is well worth stopping at on the EN2, with a number of idyllic churches to visit. It’s also home to an ornate blue and white tile wall, Painel de Azulejos. Depicting scenes of people in typical regional costumes and traditional everyday life, the wall was created in the 1930s and has become an iconic landmark in the city.

Penacova Centre of Portugal

If you’re looking for a picture- perfect rest stop, head up to the Cafe Turismo in Penacova for sweeping views of the valley and the Mondego River winding around the hills down below. Surrounding the town are a number of walking trails, which are ideal for those wanting to explore the Portuguese countryside.

Mora Alentejo

Visitors who drive by Mora should make time for its Interactive Megalithic Museum (pictured), which showcases the large stone structures of the region and shows how the culture has changed over time. The museum is an architect’s dream, with fascinating designs incorporated in the building. One particular corridor makes for the perfect photo, with holes in the white walls casting light all around.

Castro Verde Alentejo

The EN2 route curves around the small town of Castro Verde, home to some beautiful churches. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is one of the prettiest with an ornate gold roof and vibrant blue and white tiles. Another landmark in the town is a disused windmill built in the 1800s.

Faro Algarve

The EN2 route ends in the Algarve’s capital, Faro, where visitors can enjoy the best of both beach and city activities. Ilha da Culatra is one of the islands off the mainland’s coast and can be reached by boat. It’s home to Ilha do Farol, a remote small settlement on the western tip of the island. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse here to take in spectacular views of the Atlantic and the coastline.
