NORTHERN TERRITORY

RED CENTRE

Australia’s Northern Territory combines spiritual attractions, natural wonders and a rich history

T

he majestic sight of Uluru draws many to the Northern Territory, but the region has more to offer. From Aboriginal

cultures to wide-open landscapes, the destination promises expert- led tours, aerial adventures and a luxury train journey offering the ultimate Outback experience.

Heart of Australia Known as the spiritual core of the country, Uluru is one of Australia’s most famous natural landmarks, sitting within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The rock itself has a circumference of more than 5.6 miles and the sacred area, which also includes Kata Tjuta, an equally revered rock formation made up of striking red domes, is easy to explore. Visitors can head out on immersive

hikes to and around the two monoliths and to the Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing area, for 360-degree sunrise panoramas. “Visiting Uluru was a moment of awe

– it’s simply iconic. You could tell our guide, Roger, was so knowledgeable and loves what he does,” said agent Ellie O’Donnell from Wetherby Travel.

As night falls, a dinner at Wintjiri

Wiru is paired with a laser-and-drone show that brings stories of the local Anangu people to life, by projecting artwork against the night sky. During the day, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Cultural Centre helps visitors learn more through displays of Aboriginal art, history and handicrafts.

In wonderland Alice Springs (Mparntwe) is the gateway to the history of the Northern Territory. Visitors can tour around heritage sites such as Anzac Hill and the Telegraph Station, which provided an essential link for sending messages across Australia in the 19th century. Guests can enjoy Central Australia’s

starry skies alongside a barbecue dinner every evening at Earth Sanctuary’s Spirit of the Outback experience. For the perfect finale, a sunrise hot-air balloon trip with Outback Ballooning is a wish-list moment, with views over Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges. Suzanne Rowlands from Off

Broadway Travel said: “The balloon ride was so much fun – we could see the whole landscape and watched a gorgeous crimson and purple sunrise.”
