Quiet

There’s always time to reflect and breathe in Canada’s wide- open spaces. What’s more, you don’t have to be far from a major conurbation to experience it. Listen for the birds in the forest (Canada is home to nearly 700 species), the sound of a loon on a lake, or the evocative noise of a train horn in the distance. Travellers are seeking solitude and isolation more than ever – and Canada has both by the bucket.

Stars

Parks Canada is a world leader in night skies conservation, with 13 of its national parks and historic sites granted dark-sky designations. Some 12 of these are Dark Sky Preserves, while one is an International Dark Sky Park. All provide a welcome escape from glaring city light and aim to preserve natural light cycles. Attending a Dark Sky Festival is a great way to enjoy the celestial landscape and you may even be lucky enough to see a shooting star. Or you might bump into a different kind of ‘star’ entirely during one of Canada’s international film festivals.

Unique Did you know Canada is the

most-visited country by the Queen? As its head of state, Queen Elizabeth has frequented the destination numerous times, including for 45 days in 1959 (her longest tour on record) and in 1976 to open the Olympic Games in Montreal. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also famously enjoyed an extended stay on Vancouver Island over last Christmas and New Year, and Meghan is also known to love Toronto.
