ST LOUIS
The US’s Route 66 Centennial next year is driving attention to the cities along the famous Mother Road, including St Louis (pictured), Missouri’s second-largest city and a gateway to road trips in the Midwest. Kansas City, a four-hour drive west, will also come to the fore as one of the country’s 11 Fifa World Cup host cities. Capitalising on anticipated demand, British Airways is launching a route from Heathrow to St Louis, with a four-times-a-week, non-stop service operating from April 19 throughout summer. This will mark the only direct route to St Louis from the UK, giving travellers a taste of classic Americana – think retro diners, vintage motels and supersized attractions
such as the city’s Gateway Arch, the tallest monument in the country. Book it: America As You Like It offers a nine-night Missouri fly-drive taking in Route 66 from £1,695 per person, based on travel in June and including British Airways flights from Heathrow to St Louis, car hire and room-only accommodation.
