Chris Stammer at EAMAs Underfl oor Heating UH roup explains how hydronic water-based underfl oor heating delivers thermal comfort, improved air uality and design freedom and why selfbuilders are ideally placed to make the most of it.
O
ne of the most overlooked aspects of any heating specifi cation is not how effi cient a
system is on paper, but how comfortable it feels to live with day-to-day. Hydronic underfl oor heating where warm water circulates through continuous pipe loops embedded in the screed or laid within specialist panels creates a fundamentally different heat experience from radiators. Recent research from Salford Universitys Energy House . puts hard numbers behind that difference. Testing a three-bedroom detached house built to the uture Homes Standard, the study found that hydronic underfl oor heating paired with an air-to-water heat pump recorded a temperature variation of just .C at -5C and .C at 5C. Traditional radiators showed a minimum variation of .C, with other systems reaching differences of up to C. The consistency improved further when the underfl oor heating ran continuously. Rather than delivering warmth from a single point in a room, the fl oor becomes one large radiant heat emitter. That energy travels upward to warm objects, surfaces and people directly, rather than simply heating the surrounding air. The result is an immediate, enveloping feeling of warmth that is noticeably gentler and more consistent than conventional heating and the data confi rms it.
IMPROVED AIR QUALITY
Consistent, even heat does more than make a space feel comfortable. hen parts of a room are signifi cantly cooler than others, warm, moist air can condense on those cooler surfaces walls, windows, external corners creating conditions that encourage mould growth and poor air uality. Underfl oor heating maintains a consistent
For selfbuilders, the design fl exibility that underfl oor heating unlocks is arguably as valuable as its thermal performance
temperature across all surfaces, signifi cantly reducing that risk. Theres a further air uality advantage. Because radiant heat doesn’t create the convection currents that radiators
and fan-based systems do, it doesnt continually push dust, allergens and airborne particles around the room. or households with allergy sufferers or anyone with respiratory sensitivities, this
