Permeable paving: the driving force behind SuDS success

Chris odson of nterpae deles into the impact of soon to be mandatory sustainable urban drainage systems SuDS in new residential proects, and the transformatie role that permeable paing plays

T

he wider application of concrete block permeable paving to reverse the ooding from the sealing-up of our towns and cities is heralded by new measures to implement SuDS in ngland. or some  years it has been

recognised that Sustainable Drainage Systems or SuDS are essential in curbing ooding and pollution from rainwater runoff. SuDS manages rainwater by slowing it down and cleaning it up  copying, as closely as possible, the natural drainage from a site before any building work takes place. They operate near the surface and close to the source of runoff, slowing the ow and proiding additional benefits including clean water for wildlife, planting or recycling. Typical SuDS include liing or green roofs and permeable paing, as well as planted features like rain gardens.

MANDATORY SUDS

The 2010 Flood and Water Management ct included proisions for mandatory SuDS on deelopments, controlled by new local authority SuDS pproing Bodies SBs. But these proisions were not implemented at the time in ngland  although they were in Wales  relying instead on planning policies to delier SuDS. Recognising that the planning-based system has not worked, the Government is now implementing Schedule  in ngland to make SuDS mandatory  currently epected during .

ew SuDS standards and other changes will then be applied, and SB approal will be reuired before construction of drainage systems on new and redeeloped sites. Single homes may well be eempt from SB approal but SuDS could still be encouraged by
