IMarEST awards £1,000 student bursary for disabled sailing boat prototype The IMarEST has awarded a £1,000 student bursary to Forrest Worthington, who is currently studying an MSc in Naval Architecture at University College London. The bursary made prototype testing possible for Forrest’s new design concept of a boat for disabled sailing, particularly for young people with lower-limb disabilities.
Stanley Gray Fellowships awarded Tobias Laux and Kerstin Forsberg have both been awarded the prestigious Stanley Gray Fellowship. Tobias was awarded for his work on multiaxial testing of composite materials, which will enable the uptake of economical lightweight composite solutions in the marine industry and beyond. The Fellowship will support Kerstin in her PhD research into elasmobranch conservation and fisheries management, which builds on previous work she has already completed. Kerstin is also the founder and
director of Planeta Océano, a Peruvian non-profit that empow- ers coastal communities in marine conservation. Her efforts have been acknowledged with the Rolex Award for Enterprise, the Forbes’ “30 under 30 Social

IMarEST chronicles the GloBallast story in 90-page illustrated publication The GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Partnerships Programme has produced, in collaboration with IMarEST, a 90-page report on the programme, which concluded this summer just prior to the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention entering into force in September of this year. The high-quality publication,
entitled “The GloBallast Story: Reflections from a Global Family”, was specially commissioned by the IMO to chronicle the history of this transformative project, as well as explain its rationale and values and highlight key waypoints reached from its inception in 2000 through to its close this year. GloBallast was a joint initiative
aimed at preparing and building the capacity of developing countries to implement the Convention’s requirements, as well as providing practical training to surveyors and other stakehold- ers who will eventually be charged with enforcing and policing the instrument. The project also engaged with the shipping industry and academic institutions to promote the exchange and flow of technical expertise amongst a broad cross-section of maritime industry stakeholders.
