As managing partners, we view ourselves as ‘life tenants’ in the business. We want to leave the firm in a better position than when we started Sue Staunton

Joint Managing Partner

“We also look differently at how we interact with staff and clients through greater use of technology. However, as well as supporting home working, we still regard coming into the office as important.”

How do you complement each other in your joint managing partner role?

“For me, one of the most important things is that we share the same values. We usually agree with each other’s decisions and don’t disagree on fundamental issues,” said Sue. “We have different skills – I sit on the strategic, creative and innovative side of the business while Alex focuses on the operational side.”

For Alex, a key benefit is having someone to bounce ideas off. “We can try out ideas before moving them forward. During the pandemic, this was often done by meeting up for walks, where we’ve come up with some really great ideas and potential solutions.” he said.

Custodians of the firm’s legacy

Both managing partners agree about one essential responsibility that comes with the role: leaving James Cowper Kreston in the best possible shape when they eventually move on.

“One of the things I’ve taken from my predecessors in the role is to always keep thinking about the future and how we are going to make sure our people maximise their potential through our succession planning. Otherwise we’ll stand still or go backwards,” said Alex.

“As managing partners, we view ourselves as ‘life tenants’ in the business. We want to leave the firm in a better position than when we started. We constantly look to the future and seek to innovate to make sure we carry forward our 100-year heritage in the most appropriate way,” said Sue.
