Thomas Newcomen Memorial
Engine At the visitor centre you’ll find a working Newcomen atmospheric steam engine – invented here in Dartmouth by local man, Thomas Newcomen, who was actually an iron monger by trade. This engine, and 2,000 like it, started the industrial revolution that changed the world we live in.
Built in the mid 1700s, it was used by the Coventry Canal Company for pumping water into a Warwickshire canal. It was reassembled in the Dartmouth Visitor Centre in 1963 by the Newcomen Society and is visited by engineers from around the world. The engine room features a fascinating video, presented by Adam Hart-Davis, and you can actually see the engine work! Admission to the engine room is free.
Combine this with a visit to the nearby Dartmouth Museum and explore their exhibition rooms detailing the story of Thomas Newcomen and the engines that changed the world, featuring the incredible collection of model atmospheric engines designed and built by David Hulse over a 50 year period.
