New field results While relevant assessment methods using genuine components help, no lab test gives a perfect prediction of field performance. Validation of even the most stringent ratings can only be done in the real world, which is why companies are putting zinc-free hydraulic technology to the test.
Afton Chemical recently completed a two-year field trial in cement trucks in St. Louis, USA. Operating conditions were challenging, with ambient temperatures ranging from -20 to +40°C.
The technology delivered an impressive two years of uninterrupted service, with the benefits seen during pump and bench testing also being seen by end users. A strip down at the end of the two-year trial revealed less than 100mg total wear across all the pistons in the pump – a fantastic result given the severe operating conditions.
Zinc-free hydraulic fluids are not just about environmental benefits. They represent a genuine economic opportunity for oil marketers through value differentiation; real world reliability enhancement and lower TCO for end users, and better all-round support for OEM components facing the harshest operating environments ever.
It’s rare that economic and environmental pressures lead to the same solution but in the case of zinc-free hydraulics, they go hand in hand.
