ART MEETS SCIENCE Changing environmental requirements, constantly increasing performance demands, and extreme climates have created a new niche for oi l additive companies. One such company, RohMax Addit ives GmbH, (headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany), has built a successful business around its ability to create answers to these new demands.
RohMax is the leading producer of innovative pour point depressants and viscosity index improvers based on polymethacrylate (PAMA) chemistry. RohMax is a wholly-owned subsidiary of R6hm GmbH (Darmstadt, Germany) which is a division of Degussa-Huls - the chemical arm of VEBA AG(NYSE:VEB), Germany's fourth largest industrial corporation . With its "thoroughbred" lineage of chemical expertise plus its own state-of-the-art research centres in Germany and the United States (as well as dedicated manufacturing facilities in Germany, France, Canada and the US), the company anticipates and nimbly responds to its customers' ever-evolving needs.
PAMA-based polymers used in viscosity index improvers are used in engine oils, gear oils, transmission flu ids, hydraulic fluids and some two-stroke engine fluids . Other additives within RohMax's 200+ product portfolio range from those made from straight PMAs offering pour point

performance without dispersancy to mixed polymers that combine PMA and olefin copolymers to deliver dispersancy, low-temperature performance or cost- effective thickening.
A CASE-IN-POINT
Recently, customers in the Middle East, parts of Asia and the Pacific were faced with rising energy costs that sucked the profitability out of the i r blending operations. The research staff at RohMax developed VISCOPLEX EOCP1M as an answer to conventional olefin co-polymer (OCP) viscosity index improvers which needed to be heated in order to pump easily. The new VISCOPLEX EOCPTM is an emulsion olefin copolymer in a PMA-containing carrier fluid which packs nearly four times the active material as conventional OCP dispersions. The concentration of the new product offers blenders cost reductions in energy requirements, shipping costs, storage requirements, and drum disposal costs. RohMax's proprietary pour point depressant is also incorporated into this new product, offering further cost savings.
Design of new products to meet the changing demands of oil flow requires dedication of capital and personnel. With major parent chemical companies and a network of research personnel who remain well connected to their customers, RohMax continues to pioneer the latest innovations to meet future needs.
"B lenders have found VISCOPLEX EOCPTM to
provide multiple levels of cost reduction ."
