MOBIL'S EUROPEAN REFINERIES ACHIEVE ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION
Environmental management is one of today's major issues and will continue to be so throughout the 21st Century
" Mobil are continually looking at how we can l imit the impact of our operations on the environment. In particular, we are striving to reduce waste, to lower emissions and discharges and to use energy efficiently. To demonstrate our commitment to this, we decided that our European network of refineries should achieve accreditation to ISO 14001 before the year 2000."
Mobil are pleased to announce that all 5 of our European refineries, Coryton, Dunkirk, Neuhof, Gravenchon and Algeciras have reached the target and achieved accreditation.
Mobil is globally committed to manufacturing, supplying and marketing premium and speciality base o il s for a wide range of applications across many areas of the lubricant and additive manufacturing industries. Their refineries combine with specialist research and development, plus dedicated marketing and customer service to provide full support their range of base oils.
ISO 14001 outlines principles for an Environmental Management System (EMS}, which is designed and implemented to ensure:
•
compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
• • commitment to continual improvement
• management of significant environmental aspects
prevention of pollution
The EMS provides a framework to ensure that systematic control of the desired level of environmental performance is achieved and maintained, and that continuous improvement is sustained . The aims are an improved organisation, structure and focus of existing practices and systems rather than many new, additional requirements.
The 5 components of the EMS as required by ISO 14001, along with their relevant clauses are:
• • • •
environmental policy planning
implementation and operation checking & corrective action
• management review
The standard also requires periodic review and evaluation of the environmental management system itself. This ensures that it is operating effectively and takes into account any changes in the internal or external environment.

INDUSTRIAL OIL USERS TO BENEFIT FROM NEW ELF/LANSTAR ALLIANCE
Elf Oil UK Ltd and Lanstar Ltd have joined forces to combine their mutual expertise to maximise effective re-refining and waste management for industrial oil users.
The recently formed partnership was developed following extensive market research. Feedback revealed that users of high quality lubricants are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious of the need to recycle and re-refine while maintaining their objectives of supplier rationalisation and single sourcing.
Elfs expertise will be complimented by Lanstar's 40 year history of re-refining and ability to return lubricants to their original performance levels through a combination of technology available at its Halesowen site.
In addition, the partnership will offer Lanstar's expertise in waste management meaning that all
waste arising from lubrication or manufacturing processes can be treated, by recovery wherever possible or by disposal, providing for the first time a true "cradle to grave" service.
The service will be sold by the sales forces of both companies, who are fully trained to understand the needs of industrial users. Both companies have extensive development facilities enabling them to meet the most demanding individual specifications and testing routines. On-site teclinical support is available for all lubricating and waste issues.
John Jones, Lubricants Sales Manager at Elf Oil UK Ltd, said: "The partnership maximises the effectiveness of both companies to provide increasing services to our customers, enabling them to single-source products and services."
