Lucinda Riley’s The Missing Sister soared into the New Zealand chart top spot, selling 21,752 copies in just over four months—more than double the volume of any other title in the Kiwi chart. The seventh instalment in the late author’s The Seven Sisters series was long-awaited by fans, arriving nearly 18 months after book six, The Sun Sister.
Elder stateswoman enjoys Oprah book club boost

Maori psychologist Dr Hinemoa Elder’s Aroha, comprising 52 Maori life lessons, one for each week of the year, soared into third place in the New Zealand chart, selling 8,597 copies in 2021 so far. Elder, a former chil- dren’s TV presenter, received a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2019 Queen’s birthday honours, for services to psychiatry and Maori culture. Aroha was already a solid seller since its publication in September 2020, but benefitted from a boost in June: Oprah Winfrey’s book club featured it in a list of mental health book recommendations upon the launch of her podcast series with Prince Harry, “The Me You Can’t See”.

Mackesy’s soothing hit canters into top 10
Charlie Mackesy’s The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse charted ninth. The Suffolk-based author and illustrator’s soothing mental health guide has had an influence all over the world during the pandemic years, notching up bestseller chart places in Ireland, Australia and South Africa, as well as Newll as New Zealand. Of course, the title has been a runaway hit in the UK, with its success leading Mackesy to be crowned Illustrator of the Year at the 2020 Nibbies.

Herron Books shapes up with keto diet guide
Kiwi book-buyers seem to have emerged from lockdown with a new resolution to physically shape up. Alongside Air Fryer Healthy, publisher Herron Books’ second title in the chart is Keto, featuring 200 recipes with six ingredients or fewer. New Zealand is reportedly the fourth-most diet-obsessed nation in the world, with “the keto diet” the nation’s most searched- for on Google in 2019.

Sisters weather the Storm to bag hat-trick
Lucinda Riley’s third placing in the New Zealand top 10 comes with her second title, The Storm Sister, with 6,148 copies sold. The other four books in the series all chart within New Zealand’s top 26. Altogether, the series has sold more than 56,000 copies in the territory in 2021 alone. The author passed away in June this year after battling cancer, and the final title in the series, Atlas, will be released posthumously in May 2023, co-written with Riley’s son.
