Te showcase of FBF’s many events this week revolving around the general issues of freedom to publish and human rights is undoubtedly today’s panel featuring Angela Gui and Ensaf Haidar above. The session is called “Accidental Campaigning” as both women were thrust into the limelight because of family tragedies: Gui when her father, the Hong Kong-based writer, bookseller and publisher Gui Minhai, was abducted and imprisoned by Chinese authorities in 2015; Haidar’s husband is the Saudi dissident writer and blogger Raif Badawi, jailed by his country’s authorities in 2013 and sentenced to be flogged 1,000 times (50 lashings have taken place to date). Gui and Haidar will recount their own stories of how they became human rights activists, the current status of their campaigns, and what more can be done. Joining them for a broader discussion on free speech issues across the globe will be Kristenn Einarsson, chair of the International Publishers Association’s Freedom to Publish commitee.
