IN BRIEF

Italy Top 10

Vloggers, detectives and a pair of globetrotting Rebel Girls have piqued readers’ interest in Italy—with UK authors notably absent

3 Swiss surprise

Joel Dicker’s La Scomparsa di Stephanie Mailer charted third in Italy, with the Swiss author the highest-ranking non-Italian in the bestseller list. The title, released in May, has already sold 91,343 copies.

Bambine Ribelli 2 has been a hit, but

it cannot compare to the original, which has sold a whisker under 400,000 copies in Italy since publication. For 2018, it’s in sixth place, having shifted 76,255 copies

8 Big Wonder

R J Palacio’s Wonder was already a worldwide hit before its Julia Roberts-starring film adaptation bumped it into the strasophere last year. In 2018 to date, it’s sold 75,042 copies in Italy.

Method madness

of the charts

Veteran crime author Andrea Camilleri is Italy’s number one for the year to date, with his latest Commissioner Montalbano title, Il metodo Catalanotti (Te Catalanotti Method). Te 26th title in the series has shifted 172,939 copies to date. At 93, Camilleri is older than any UK chart-topper, with one exception—Judith Kerr, who is a little under two years his senior.

Janeczek’s novelised memoir is picture perfect

Helena Janeczek—born in Monaco to a family of Polish descent, brought up in Germany and now resident in Italy— has seen her breakthrough title La Ragazza con la Leica (The Girl with the Leica) climb to fourth in Italy’s overall chart for 2018. The award-winning novel, based on the life of photo- journalist Gerda Taro, who was killed in the Spanish Civil War, has sold 1,058% more copies than all of Janeczek’s other books combined.

Serial killer thriller firms up native contingent

Spanish crime author Alicia Giménez Bartlett’s Mio Caro Serial Killer (My Dear Serial Killer)—her latest Barcelona-set Inspector Petra Delicado title—charted seventh in Italy, selling 75,928 copies since March. Of the nine authors in the top 10, four are from European countries outside Italy, and there’s one American. The highest-ranking UK author is Gail Honeyman, in 23rd place. Thanks, Brexit.

Elena Ferrante is hardly slacking when

it comes to global sales, but in Italy, she’s nothing less than a phenomenon. With 587,637 books sold in total, L’Amica Geniale hits ninth—a good seven years after its publication

Stream team backed by hefty vlogger following

Though YouTuber sightings in the UK bestseller charts have largely died out now—with the exception of Zoella and, er, Jordan Peterson—both Italy and Spain’s 2018 top 10s feature their own homegrown vloggers in author mode. YouTuber duo Me Contro Te’s Deyes-esque activity book, Divertiti con Luì e Sofì (Have Fun with Luì e Sofì), has sold 93,010 copies to date, no doubt assisted by their 2.7 million subscribers.

A Night to remember for Rebel Girls pair

The most-backed book series in crowdfunding history, Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo’s Storie della Buonanotte per Bambini Ribelli (Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls) parts one and two chart side by side in the Italian top 10. The sequel to the worldwide bestseller has not managed to match its predecessor’s huge sales in the UK, having shifted less than half the original’s volume in 2018. But the sequel pips the prequel in the authors’ native Italy, by 12,717 copies. Topping the Bambini e Ragazzi category, the pair were two of just five kids’ titles in the overall top 50, and the only homegrown kids’ authors.
