INTRODUCTION

The Bookseller Buyer’s Guide Children’s Autumn/Winter 2023

A preview of new titles published between August 2023–January 2024

Using the Buyer’s Guides

The titles listed in the Autumn/Winter 2023 Buyer’s Guide are divided into categories, with sub-divisions according to format and age range where appropriate. Within each category, the entries are listed under the publishers’ imprints, which have been ordered alphabetically. All the books included

were submitted by publishers via the online database (Bookseller BuyersGuide.co.uk). Regardless of size, publishers were restricted to submitting 10 titles and/or series per category/imprint, and given a 30-word limit to describe each title. If a title is an audiobook or has an audio edition, it is stated in the title’s metadata. Other formats are as

follows: hb (hardback); pb (paperback); tpb (trade paperback); pbo (paperback original); mmpb (mass-market paperback); eb (e-book).

A

few years ago at a Bologna Children’s Book Fair party, I was cornered by a rather over-excited Italian publisher’s rights director who proceeded to rail at me about their perceived deficiencies of British children’s books. The main argument was kids’ books from Blighty were “only about unicorns, wizards and princesses” and shirked away from difficult issues. I do not think that was even the case at the time—I

was too many Negronis down to make a coherent counter-argument—but it is certainly not true in recent vintage as there have been scads of bestsellers which deal with at the very least in part tricky, and sometimes even previously somewhat taboo, subject matter. That is continuing this autumn with some standout titles that delve deep into gritty topics like grief (Adam Baron’s Oscar’s Lion), sectarian violence (Brian Conaghan’s Treacle Town) and anti-racism (A M Dassau’s Kicked Out!, Adam Rutherford, E L Norry and Adam Ming’s Where Are You Really From?). The wizard and unicorn side is still well-represented—new outings from Katherine Rundell, Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Maz Evans to name just three—and the strength of UK’s children’s sector is in both the challenging and more crowd-pleasing sides of the market.
