ally Rooney, 28 years young and the fledgling author of two bestsell- ing, critically acclaimed novels, triumphed at the British Book Awards, winning both the Fiction Book of the Year and the overall Book of the Year for her title Normal People.

It has been a whirlwind couple of years for the Catstlebar, Count Mayo-born Rooney, who lives in Dublin. She has become one of Europe’s most fêted novelists since her début, Conversations with Friends (Faber), was released in 2017. She has been called “the Salinger of the Snapchat generation” and broken out of the books world into the wider entertainment business on both sides of the Atlantic. Her fellow Millennial women are particularly supportive: Taylor Swiſt is a superfan; the actress/model/“influencer” Emily Ratajkowski raved about Normal People to her 27 million Instagram followers; Lena Dunham tweeted: “Sally Rooney is my fave writer working in modern fiction.” The heavyweight, traditional media are onboard too, with the New Yorker and Vanit Fair recently running Continues overleaf 
