Belgian author/illustrator Kity Crowther, who won the 2010 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), will be on hand to discuss her life, books and “L’ora Magica” (“The Magic Hour”), an exhibition of her previously unpublished work that opens today at the Hamelin Association art gallery in central Bologna. Crowther was born in Brussels to a Swedish mother and English father. She became immersed in books very young, partially due to a hearing impairment which meant she learned to speak relatively late. She began drawing and writing her books in the early 1990s shortly aſter graduating from Brussels’ Institut Saint-Luc art college, and has now created or contributed to nearly 50 titles, around half of which she has been the author/illustrator of. Crowther was 39 when she was awarded the ALMA, the second-youngest winner (aſter Australian illus- trator Shaun Tan, who was 37). Crowther will also hold a free master- class at the Hamelin Association tomorrow (24th March) at 11 a.m.
