It is the 20th anniversary of the founding of the “Nobel for children’s literature” by the Swedish government in honour of Pippi Longstocking creator Astrid Lindgren. This year’s winner announcement will have the Swedish Arts Council director Kajsa Ravin and Jan Björklund, Sweden’s ambassador to Italy, on hand. A number of the previous 21 laureates—there were two winners in 2003 and 2005—have been established giants (Philip Pullman, Maurice Sendak, the German illustrator Wolf Erlbruch). But the award is rarely predictable as it has also recognised younger, mid- career creators such as US YA star Jacqueline Woodson, Belgian picture book artist Kity Crowther and South Korean illustrator Baek Hee-na—and a smatering of organisations like Praesa, a Cape Town-based children’s literacy charit. With 17 nominations, the UK is joint top of the country league table, with Malorie Blackman, Quentin Blake and Juno Dawson among the candidates.
