s Euro 2024 played out this month (with football going to Spain’s la casa
and not to England’s home), it’s no surprise to see five football- related titles in the current top 20 sports biographies and autobiographies, according to Nielsen BookScan. However, even combined, these five titles fall short of beating the bestselling sport biography of 2024 so far: Guenther Steiner’s Surviving to Drive. The highest entry among
footballers is Kammy: My Unbelievable Life by Chris Kamara in third place. In it, Kamara opens up about his 2022 diagnosis of a rare brain condition called apraxia, which led him to step back as a commentator for Sky Sports. Paul Merson’s Hooked trails in fifth and shares details of Merson’s battles with alcohol, drug and gambling addictions. Award-winning player Beth Mead is the only female foot- baller among the tribe. Her story, Lioness, came out in paperback in March. Myriad sports are represented

in the top 20, but Formula 1 is firmly in the spotlight and is responsible for driving key sales across the combined subcategories and among sporting books more generally. Steiner is the unlikely star of Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” and former team principal of Haas, who now has a backseat role as a pundit in the paddock.
His autobiography has sold a combined total of more than 88,000 copies through BookScan’s Total Consumer Market since it was published in April 2023. The follow-up, Unfiltered, is due to be released in October this year. Steiner is joined in the top 20
by F1 engineer Adrian Newey’s How to Build a Car, which has sold
