through Nielsen BookScan’s Total Consumer Market for her début, which was aided by its nod as the Fairyloot subscription service’s January Adult pick, plus a Waterstones exclusive edition. This follows the previous number one, Saara El-Arifi’s Faebound (HarperVoyager), which had similar boosts from Fairyloot, Waterstones and the Goldsboro Books’ Sci-Fi and Fantasy Fellowship.
This is the tip of the iceberg. In the past 52 weeks, a subscription box
title has rocketed to the top spot of Original Fiction 16 times, and has topped the Children’s & YA Fiction chart on six occa- sions. Almost every author on a “subbies” monthly list—particu- larly if featured by Fairyloot or Illumicrate—has achieved a personal-best weekly TCM total, usually in excess of 10,000 units. Especially as Waterstones (and the publishers) are clearly trying to align to subscrip- tion releases with exclusive editions. And yet. One wonders if this model truly builds a fanbase for these authors or is merely a
one-week shot of sales adrenaline that dissipates quickly. El-Arifi’s Faebound, for example, has had a tpical post-subscription result: it shiſted 1,128 units in its second week, 92% down on its launch. Or Continues overleaf

hough Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You claimed the number one spot for a second consecutive week in the Publisher E-book
Ranking—and Nita Prose’s long-running staple The Maid was second—newcomers accounted for six entries in this chart and half of the top 20 (available on The Bookseller’s website). At third, Robert Hardman’s Charles III is the top débutant, a rare sighting for non-fiction in the top 10. The “inside story” of CIII’s ascension—I think by slaying the previous ruler on Bosworth Field, though I’ve not closely followed these matters—has shifted 17,000 units in print through Nielsen BookScan. Prose’s prose hit second in the Bookstat charts,
too, though it was some 1,500 copies behind Before the Dawn, the eighth detective Karen Hart procedural by Oxford University chemistry researcher turned bestselling crime author D S Butler. It is Butler’s first Bookstat number one; last year’s Find Her Alive (Thomas & Mercer) débuted in second.

It was a good week for the Hachette group—the
UK’s biggest traditional trade e-book house (see Lead Story, pp06-07)—with half of the Top 10, including two from Nora Roberts: Inheritance and Random in Death under her J D Robb pseudonym.
Clarification Hachette has stated that Verity sold 5,698 units; Secret Hours 7,363; Broken Light 5,228; Inheritance 3,773; and Random in Death 3,868.
