Farren International Receives Award from Columbia Helicopters for Successful Transports

Farren International, a global supplier of transportation and rigging services since 1959, recently received an award from Columbia Helicopters for successfully completing its 20th mission for the company.

Helicopter transports 17 through 20 occurred in September when Farren International transported four Chinooks received from the Republic of China (Taiwan) Air Force. Three were model 234s, with the remaining being a Ch-47D airframe. After being offloaded from ship at the Port of Seattle over Labor Day weekend, two of the Model 234s were trucked to Columbia Helicopters’ headquarters in Aurora, Oregon. The other two aircraft were transported to Columbia Helicopters’ operations in Woodburn, Oregon.

These aircraft made for extremely oversized loads. Farren International called on its decades of experience to ensure that all arrived at their destinations in a safe and timely manner. For example, special routes were taken and much of the driving occurred in the early hours of the morning when traffic was at its lightest.

The award for the transport milestone was presented in October 2016 at the Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Association of the U.S. Army. Paul Leach, director of military maintenance for Columbia Helicopters, made the presentation at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Aircraft Transportation Specialist Glenn Wargo received the award on behalf of Farren International. “The award presented to me today was an outstanding honor and surprise,” said Wargo. “Over the last two years, Farren and Columbia as a team have put a lot of effort into assuring all aircraft were properly loaded, secured, covered, transported, delivered, and offloaded. The award today is one of the highlights of what we have accomplished. I’m thankful for the support I received from Mr. Paul Leach and Mr. Kurt Koehnke to entrust our company to transport these 20 aircraft. My thanks to our operations staff and drivers, especially Derek Smith, for their efforts to make this project a success.”

LORD Corporation Receives FAA DER Approval for Optional Installation of the Tail Skid Weight on the Bell 206

LORD Corporation recently announced FAA designated engineering representative (DER) approval for optional installation of the tail skid weight on the Bell 206.

The tail skid weight, included in the LORD elastomer tail rotor trunnion bearing kit (P/N LB2-1010-20-1) is now an optional installation and is only required as needed to assist in the dynamic balancing of the tail rotor hub assembly.

According to Rodolphe Leroy, LORD Corporation sales marketing and business development manager, this approval is significant since it is estimated that very few B206s require the tail skid weight for this STC. Operators will benefit from lower maintenance costs, extended life, and reduced vibration without needing to drill into the tail skid or affecting cabin load. The STC ensures a dynamically balanced tail rotor hub assembly throughout the life of the LORD tail rotor trunnion kit.

The LORD tail rotor trunnion is specifically engineered for the Bell 206 to reduce maintenance time and keep aircraft in the air longer. Due to self-centering of the elastomeric bearing in the hub, installation is relatively quick and easy, with no effect upon the static balancing procedures currently used. After the elastomeric tail rotor bearing has been installed in the tail rotor hub and blade assembly, installation on the aircraft remains the same. Dynamic balancing is accomplished with the same balancing equipment and procedures as currently used. The kit eliminates lubrication at 50 hours or after exposure to rain and snow, and eliminates grease from blades and blade feathering bearings – prolonging bearing life and improving aesthetics. Since the trunnion has been installed on hundreds of Bell 206 helicopters and has proven to deliver at least 2,500 hours between maintenance, operators are able to keep their aircraft flying an average of three times longer between tail rotor trunnion maintenance, therefore reducing costs. Furthermore, reduced vibration levels alleviate pilot fatigue.

“LORD has decades of experience working with Bell on the 206 as well as other platforms, all with the joint goal of keeping pilots safe, while also minimizing unscheduled maintenance and costs,” said Leroy. “This option further solidifies our offering to provide long-term flexibility for operators to maintain a proper dynamically balanced tail rotor hub assembly throughout the life of the aircraft.”

Operators that currently have the tail skid weight installed may choose to take no action if they are having no issues with dynamic tail rotor balancing. Operators can seek more technical information and/or installation instruction online.
