FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR

INTRODUCTION I would like to take a moment to

introduce a new columnist to our team. Randy Mains’ monthly column will be called “My Two Cents Worth” and will focus on a smattering of hel- icopter related thoughts and experi- ences from his 44 years in the helicop- ter industry. Randy has flown over 13,000 flight hours having flown in America, Vietnam, Australia herding cattle by helicopter, Papua New Guinea flying seismic survey in a Bell Jet Ranger, and heli-rig operations in the S-58T. Randy was a senior instructor pilot for Bell Helicopter International in Iran teaching pilots to be instructor pilots. Randy also flew 6 ½ years as a HEMS pilot trying to prove the concept to a doubting American public and skeptical med- ical community when Hermann Hospital in Houston was only the sec- ond hospital-based HEMS program in America. Following EMS, he then flew 13

years in the Sultanate of Oman as a Major in the Royal Oman Police Air Wing and has flown as a HEMS pilot for the King of Saudi Arabia flying a twenty-place twin-engine Bell 214ST off of his 500’ yacht. Randy is currently a flight simula-

tor instructor and flight examiner training and examining more than 160 airline transport pilots for Abu Dhabi Aviation in the Bell 412 EP flight simulator based in Dubai. He has a degree in Journalism

and English Creative writing from San Diego State University, and has written and published three helicop- ter industry books highlighting his experiences as an Army Pilot in Vietnam and as a Pilot in the early days of HEMS. Mains became an activist for

change in the HEMS industry on August 31st 2010 when he heard of yet another HEMS crash, this one occurring in Arkansas claiming four

more lives. From that moment onward he has been invited to be a keynote speaker speaking around the country and internationally in an effort to personally try to bring about change to a broken HEMS industry in America. Since the FAA has now mandated

that Part 135 operators must have CRM training once a year, Randy offers consultant services, teaching CRM and AMRM (air medical resource management) to HEMS crews as yet another way to try to per- sonally bring safety to the HEMS industry.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE We introduce an additional regu-

lar column this month titled, “Meet a Rotorcraft Pro”, where we shine a spotlight on iconic individuals who have made positive impacts on the helicopter industry. This month we highlight Barry Lloyd of CALFIRE. In our Avionics segment, we highlight the Garmin G500H and how it’s bringing new levels of situational awareness into the helicopter cockpit. In our Sales segment, Art Berard of Berard Aviation shares his experience of exporting a helicopter to Africa.
