Universal Avionics Boasts First Success Story for the “Technical Career Pathways” Grant Program
Universal Avionics is proud to be part
of the first Southern Arizona Technical Career Pathways H1B Grant success story for Pima County, Arizona. Yazmin Farias, an intern at Universal Avionics working as a Manufacturing Continuous Improvement Project Engineer, took advantage of the com pany’s tuition reimbursement along side the grant funds to help pay for her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arizona’s Engineering pro gram. Yazmin was recently offered a fulltime employment opportunity as a Manufacturing Project Engineer in Tucson upon her graduation from the University. Available to hightech businesses in
the southern Arizona counties of Pima, Cochise, Santa Cruz and Yuma where
Universal Avionics’ Corporate Headquarters and Manufacturing Division is located, the H1B Grant pro vides an opportunity for workers to gain the education and skills needed to advance in the hightech workplace. The grant “provide(s) training for 200 incumbent workers to move up into high level occupations, thus expanding the existing pipeline of hightech talent in the region, capitalizing on recent innovations increasing workers’ access to higher education and increasing the diversity of the hightech workforce.” The grant pays for 50 percent of the cost of tuition and books for the employee/student, with their employer matching the other 50 percent. Targeted degrees include Engineering (Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical and Aerospace), Computer Systems Analysts, Network Administrators and Systems Engineers. “Our opportunity to participate in
this grant is a winwin for both employ ee and employer. From a career point, employees are achieving higher educa tion which can lead to career advance ment and higher earnings. From a finan
cial point, both employee and employer get to stretch their continuing educa tion dollars much further,” said Kim Murray, Universal Avionics’ Corporate Director of Human Resources. “Yazmin is a perfect example of success within the grant and we are very pleased to have her put her engineering degree to work with us,” she added. Yazmin credits Universal for being
very supportive of her education and an overall excellent place to work. Now with a major in Engineering Management and a minor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, she hopes to someday continue her education by pursuing a Master’s degree.
The Passing Of A Rotorcraft Pro It is with great sadness that Metro Aviation announces the passing of
the company's production manager and longtime employee, Russell K. Garner. Mr. Garner died suddenly in the Shreveport, LA area on 26 JUN 2012. Garner was instrumental in the success of the company with sev eral achievements related to equipment integration and supplemental type certificate (STC) development projects at the company for over 25 years. Known for his ability to take a project from a conceptual stage to full integration, completion and manufacturing, Garner's many accom plishments include the development of air conditioning systems for the EC135 and EC145, as well as many other successes. Company owner and president, Mike Stanberry commented, "Russell
was a key component to the success of our company as well as a great friend to us all. His kind manner as a true gentleman and his innate abil ity to bring a concept to reality was his hallmark. We will all miss him dearly."
