4. Sensory Tray Scooping Treasure Hunt


Sensory play is an excellent way for children to strengthen fine motor skills ready for moving up to ‘big school’. Fill a tray with materials such as rice, sand, or dried pasta as well as small treasures such as loose parts or miniature figures and provide scoops or tweezers for children to transfer the items into other containers. The precise hand movements used during the activity help develop the finger strength and coordination needed for pencil control, cutting with scissors, and other classroom tasks. Sensory exploration also promotes concentration and engagement.


School readiness develops through opportunities to play, explore, communicate, and solve problems together. By incorporating activities such as these into the classroom, teachers can help children strengthen the essential skills needed to support a positive start to Reception and beyond.

A simple speaking-and-listening game can have a big impact on communication development. Present playful questions such as, “Would you rather have a pet dinosaur, a pet shark or a pet giraffe?” or “Would you rather live in a castle or a treehouse?” Children take turns sharing their answers and explaining their reasoning. You can enhance the activity by using animal figures or small props to help children visualise their ideas and spark further discussion. This activity builds vocabulary, develops conversation skills, encourages active listening, and helps children learn to take turns when speaking.
