More than ‘just for sensory rooms’…
The impact that light and glow resources have on sensory stimulation means they’re already widely recognised as a staple for sensory room spaces. Different colours and light levels can evoke a variety of emotional responses and create safe, relaxing spaces to support learning and development.
Providing areas within your continuous provision which allow for different levels of light stimulation enables children to use these spaces to self-regulate by increasing or decreasing the amount of light they are exposed to in search of their optimal levels.
As an example, some children might gravitate to construction as their go-to area for play. That means it’s more likely they’ll get all the benefits of this type of play – the problem-solving and experimentation with size and shape, the critical thinking, and the mathematical language. But for those children that don’t feel a pull towards construction, including glow resources might spark their interest in a form of play they wouldn’t normally engage with.
Expanding learning
Using light and glow as enhancements to your continuous provision can also expand potential learning outcomes for children beyond those in more ‘traditional’ areas of learning.
