Let’s Investigate Woodland Footprints 810463

Simple resources that allow children to investigate and explore their environment are ideal for bringing fun and adventure to your outdoor area. We asked three nurseries to test our Let’s Investigate Farmyard and Woodland Footprints.

Abbey 345 Preschool, Lincolnshire

The excitement started when we opened the boxes and discovered sets of stones bearing an image of an animal on one side and a three-dimensional footprint on the other. Our first activity was part of our staff meeting as I made the staff guess the footprints and work out which animal they belonged to. We all agreed they were a lovely tactile resource and staff thought of lots of ideas including adding them to our small world farm and wildlife collections, using them as a treasure box or sensory resource and many other great indoor ideas - showing how versatile and open ended these products are. Then we moved on to discussing the outdoor ideas which we tried with the children.

We used the stones for a variety of activities outside, the stones were hidden in piles of leaves and the children had to match the footprint or the animal with a photograph or a toy. This provided staff and children alike with plenty of opportunities for discussion (communication and language - all three areas, understanding of the world) and matching and sorting (mathematics - shape, space and measure), the children were working together to find, identify and determine which stones matched the toys ensuring opportunities for personal, social and emotional development across all areas.

They also made take home footprints using air drying clay and used both side of the stones to make prints and indentations in play
