Magical Messy Sand


This is a brilliant activity that helps to reinforce the basic principles of cause and effect.

You will need: • A large washing up bowl • Squeeze or spray bottles • Bicarbonate of soda • Water • Vinegar • Play sand • Food colouring


Method: Place the play sand in the washing up bowl and add the baking powder (try experimenting with different quantities, you don’t need a lot of baking powder to create an effect but the more you use the more magical the results will be). Involve your little learners in stirring the dry ingredients until all of the baking powder is well mixed into the sand. Next slowly add the water so that the sand is slightly moist and mouldable. Let your little learners get to work making castles and sand sculptures. Once they’re happy with their creations, it’s time to start making the magic happen! Fill the bottles with vinegar and food colouring and let them spray their creations to paint them with colour and make them fizz.
