News Over a million register for power of attorney in 2023

New research from probate brokers Final Duties has shown that power of attorney applications increased by a third in 2023. Appointing a power of attorney gives

someone else the legal authority to make decisions on behalf of somebody when they no longer have legal capacity. It is commonly used in cases where a person develops dementia, or otherwise anticipates a loss of mental capability.

The analysis by Final Duties shows that the number of power of attorney applications increased by a third in 2023 to around 1.14 million – up from 852,000 in 2022 and passing the 1 million mark for the first time. The past 10 years have seen a surge in the number of applications –there were just 274,000 in 2013. This increase has been attributed to an ageing UK population and a corresponding

increase in the prevalence of dementia. Final Duties MD Jack Gill said: “The baby boomer generation is ageing and the unfortunate consequence of this ageing population is an increase in prevalence of dementia within our society.

Championing Social Care announces new patron

Boutique Care Homes has become patron of social care charity Championing Social Care. The founder and managing director of Boutique, Ameet Kotecha, is joining the charity as an ambassador.

Boutique Care Homes, a family-run care group, currently provides residential and specialist dementia care across three homes. This year marks the group’s five- year anniversary. As patron, Boutique Care Homes will be providing both financial and personal support to Championing Social Care, a volunteer-led group of leaders from across the social care sector focused on delivering positive stories and initiatives about the sector. Ameet Kotecha said: “We are delighted to join Championing Social Care as a patron and to be part of this inspirational group. As 2024 marks the five-year anniversary of Boutique Care Homes being established, I wanted to mark this special milestone with joining the charity. Championing Social Care carry out some incredible work, raising awareness and profile for the care sector, shining a light on all the positive news stories. There is so much to be proud of within our sector and the charity enables the hard work and key moments to be celebrated.”

“This has naturally led to a spike in the number of applications being made for power of attorney, as those suffering from dementia appoint a trusted loved one to act on their behalf in anticipation of a time when they are no longer able to do so for themselves.”

Barchester’s Charitable Foundation donates £225k to good causes

Avnish Goyal CBE, chair of the Championing Social Care organising committee, commented: “I am thrilled that Boutique Care Homes Ltd is joining us as one of our patrons. Our mission is to shine a positive light on the work of the care sector and the breadth of support that our patrons give is a vital part of our success. On a personal level, I am also delighted to welcome Ameet Kotecha as an ambassador. All of our ambassadors play an important role in sharing our message and providing guidance and leadership. Ameet’s energy and experience and dedication to care will help us to continue on our path of growth.”

Barchester’s Charitable Foundation has announced that it achieved a donation milestone of £225,000 in 2023. Reaching the milestone enabled the charity to provide vital help to a staggering 160 small groups and charities, plus 87 individuals in one year alone. Established in 2000, Barchester’s Charitable Foundation was established to help older people and adults living with a disability or mental health problems. The charity provides grants to improve mobility and quality of life, distributing thousands of pounds to individuals, small community groups, and charities across the UK every year. Simon McCall, chairperson of Barchester’s Charitable Foundation and Barchester’s commercial director, said: “We support older people and other adults with disabilities by giving grants to help people connect or reconnect with others in their local community. Every single individual or small local charity that we have helped over the past year has faced serious challenges during very tough times, and we are immensely proud to have been able to help each and every one of them through the kindness, support and generosity of our fundraisers and donors.”
