and places of interest into the design. We discussed and worked with ideas based on White Space Living’s mood board and colour scheme. Bringing the outside into a mural or repeat wallpaper design is what we love and do best. Care homes like this idea as it encourages familiarity. We offer this as part of our bespoke design service. Installing the reception feature wall
was not straightforward as it needed lots of planning when designing. There were pillars and a sink area to consider. The map mural, printed in two pieces, had to be very precise when putting the map together on computer, colouring and incorporating the iconic images. Installing both murals had to be spot on
to make sure the designs matched exactly when pieced together by the wallpaper installer. A good relationship between the wallpaper installer and printer is vital when communicating installation instructions in writing and verbally.
Challenging designs One of the many challenges when designing repeat wallpaper and murals for care homes and any other industry is that you never know what you will be asked to create. I keep a very open mind and I love challenges. Just before lockdown last year,
Cranford Residential Home in Exmouth in Devon commissioned me to design a mural for their imitation country pub. Cranford had turned their garden shed into a small country pub called The Cherry Cottage. The Cherry Cottage is a social space for activities and a place for residents and their families to meet and enjoy light refreshments. The design brief was to create a country cottage pub scene with a life-size bar. It was certainly challenging designing
this mural as everything in the design, from the bar, beer pumps and wine glasses etc. had to be designed according to their real measurements. Due to lockdown, I have yet to see the mural in situ but I hear from Cranford the mural has been well received.
The future Although 2021 has the most pressing challenges with Brexit and the battle with Covid, we remain positive and even more determined to move forward. We aim to fulfil whatever measures are needed to continue the new ways of working with care homes, bringing their wall spaces to life through bespoke design. Our design service is very flexible so
whatever you have in mind, come and talk to us to discuss your ideas.

Gareth Wyn Jones
Gareth Wyn Jones is founder of Switchscene. A photographer by trade, in 2004 Gareth was asked by a client to put some of his work on wallpaper. At that time, it had just become possible to buy blank wallpaper so Gareth started printing on a large photo printer and became one of the first players in an emerging market. Since that time, Switchscene has printed wallpaper for the Royal Marsden hospital, Oxford University Press, Tottenham Hotspur F.C. plus many offices, bars, restaurants, schools and care homes.
